It’s hard to find something on the market that caters for run commuting. Carrying a laptop and running are a bit orthogonal. However, I find it’s one of the most efficient ways to sneak a workout into your daily routine without impacting on family life etc. I have tried many bags for this, usually repurposing an internal bladder pocket for the laptop, but it’s a hard thing to do well. You end up carrying a lot of weight, and most modern running hybrid backpacks don’t work well with heavy loads, bounce around or the shoulder straps dig into you or they don’t have much capacity or the zip doesn’t stay shut, or they need constant adjustment. Not so with this one:
1. The wide shoulder straps mean even with a heavy weight the load is distributed and comfortable. This is especially important when running as thin straps and a heavy load can end up making your shoulders sore.
2. The pockets on the straps are absolutely perfect for stashing your phone, so you can easily reach it to check the route or switch up your playlist while running
3. The roll top and tapered shape of the bag allows you to dynamically expand or contract the bags capacity while always holding everything firmly in place so that it won’t bounce around. If you don’t have much stuff you can roll the top all the way down to secure the contents in place. The bag is really wide at the top which means it becomes absolutely massive if you only roll it a couple of times. It comfortably takes more than my previous 26l bag, and there’s a cord that pulls down the sides of the roll top to keep everything snug
4. The dedicated laptop sleeve is generously padded. I am not worried about damaging my laptop when putting the bag down or anything like that.
5. The chest, shoulder and waist straps are nice and firm. There is a tiny bit of give which is really well calibrated for carrying a heavier load while running.
6. The side pockets are deep and have enough elasticity to allow you to fit most bottles, but they’re also tight enough that there’s no chance of your bottle falling out while you run
7. The front pocket is great. Its generously sized and the strap pulls it nicely in to keep anything you put in there secure
8. Theres an extra pocket inside to keep your wallet and AirPods case or bits like that which is very welcome
9. Despite being incredibly lightweight (600g) the construction feels really solid. It feels like it should weigh double that. It must be using high quality materials
10. This is more personal but I really like the aesthetic of it. It’s really neat and stylish and the build quality really shows
I don’t know if Salomon intended to create the perfect run commute bag, but they certainly didn’t just slap a running vest harness on a traditional backpack. This thing is incredibly well thought out and fit for purpose for anyone running with a laptop, change of clothes and other essentials. I hope they keep making these because I intend to get a lot of intense usage out of it
